On Sunday July 12th, Kol Shalom members and friends will take a stroll through Ladd’s Addition. We’ll walk to four rose gardens while exploring the diagonal pattern of Ladd’s Addition which was inspired by L’Enfants Washington D.C. street plan. We’ll talk a bit about the development of this historic community which was mostly built between 1905 and 1930. Many Italian families moved in after the building of St. Phillip Neri Church was built in 1913. Ladd’s was officially open to Asians in 1939 though some Asian families had already moved into the area. This was during an era if extreme anti-Asian prejudice. There’s lots more history to share: Mr. Ladd, the opening of the Madison/Hawthorne Bridge and the development of the east side of the city.
Let’s meet in front of Floyd’s Coffee House and Wine Bar at eleven, 1996 SE Ladd Ave, 97214.
We’ll spend an hour or so walking, learning and visiting.
Take good care, Karen LaMorticella
