Founder's Message: Kol Shalom Community for Humanistic Judaism was born in the fall of 1993, when seventeen people who had been working toward organizing for a year and a half, decided to affiliate with the Society for Humanistic Judaism. The first exploratory meeting had been called in April, 1992 by Jane Goldhamer, who had been a member-at-large of the Society for several years and wanted to establish a community in the Portland area. The original name was Humanistic Jews of Greater Portland, which was changed to the present name in 2001--the same year that the community outgrew holding most of its activities in the Goldhamers' house and moved children's education, an adult program, and quarterly Shabbat services to Mittleman Jewish Community Center (MJCC). In 2004 Kol Shalom moved into a new office/meeting space in the SW Portland community of Hillsdale. Activities are now held in our Hillsdale center, as well as MJCC and members homes. Our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services have been held at the West Hills Unitarian Fellowship. |
