Kol Shalom, Community for Humanistic Judaism offers a non-theistic way to be Jewish. We welcome into membership all men,women and children who identify with the history, culture, and fate of the Jewish people.

Our Mission Statement

We are a supportive community offering a viable alternative within Judaism, providing opportunities for growth and a sense of belonging- a place and a way to celebrate Jewish identity without requiring belief in a supernatural being or adherence to prescribed rituals.

We seek to provide a welcoming. egalitarian environment for those who support Jewish and humanistic values. We welcome into membership those who identify as Jews, non-Jewish spouses or partners, and their children.Our purpose is to maintain and further develop our historical, cultural and moral traditions by:

• Building and maintaining community
• Meeting Jewish and human needs of our members
• Celebrating Jewish holidays, festivals and life cycles
• Providing education for children and adults
• Sharing in the life of the wider Jewish community
• Supporting social justice for all

Our Local Activities

Local activities are held at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center in Portland, the West Hills Unitarian Fellowship, and members' homes. Some activities include: 
• Children's and adult education programs
• Services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
• Passover Seder; Hanukah, Purim & Sukkot parties
• Monthly and twice monthly programs including speakers and discussion groups
• Music Makers group
• Celebrations and ceremonies for life cycle events, such as a humanistic bar/bat mitzvah
• Periodic Shabbat services
• Havdalah potlucks
• Noshing. schmoozing

How To Join Us

You are welcome to learn more about Kol Shalom by attending our activities. Please see the calendar for details.

When you join Kol Shalom you also join the national Society for Humanistic Judaism(SHJ), founded by Rabbi Sherwin Wine in 1969. You will receive copies of the Society's Journal as well as our local mailings. 

Membership fees are $411 per year individual, and $685 per couple or family. We are a nonprofit organization.

We will mail 3 free issues of our monthly newsletter to interested individuals. Nonmembers can continue to receive the newsletter for an annual subscription of $21 per year.
