Kol Shalom's Social Action Committee coordinates our support of the Southwest Community Health Clinic. With part-time office staff, volunteer medical staff from local teaching hospitals and no government funding, this little clinic serves uninsured working families three evenings a week.  We are one of 12 neighborhood congregations (Jewish, Christian and Muslim) that make up a "support board", where we are represented by one of our former board presidents and the chairperson of our SAC.

This year (2008-9) that board is organizing monthly neighborhood trail walks to promote Good Health and Community Spirit, and to ready us all for a Spring Walkathon -- a fund-raiser for the clinic.  A KS member is one of the three organizers, having led us on summer hikes for years.

Individual members of Kol Shalom and a nearby Catholic church also volunteer by feeding the volunteer medical personnel, who come to the clinic directly from their hospital jobs.  Each clinic evening a tray of sandwiches, veggies and cheese or pizza is taken there by a volunteer, and one of our members, who is a nurse/midwife, has volunteered professional consultation.
